Animal Control Officer

The purpose of this classification is to lead and perform responsible work in the enforcement of animal control ordinances that cover various animals, including those that may be diseased, unlicensed, dangerous, and stray.

Examples of duties include:

• Assisting in supervising, directing, and evaluating assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, and completing employee performance appraisals; assisting with training staff in the field.
• Coordinating daily work activities; organizing, prioritizing, and assigning work; monitoring status of work in progress and inspecting completed work; conferring with assigned staff, assisting with complex/problem situations, and providing technical expertise.
• Capturing unlicensed, stray, uncontrolled, sick, or injured domestic animals, livestock or wildlife by means of traps, catch pole or other accepted means and transporting them to the animal shelter.
• Enforcing the city's ordinances: issuing warning notices to owners of domestic animals, livestock and wildlife that are in violation; investigating and responding to complaints of cruelty to animals and violations of the animal control ordinances; working in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies; testifying in court regarding violations.
• Performing duties which ensure the welfare of the animals in the shelter: making daily rounds to check animals in all areas of the shelter, ensuring satisfactory conditions, security, and proper enclosure; reporting illness, deaths, or abnormal behavior or physical condition; helping to care for injured animals; administering medications prescribed by veterinarian; assisting with euthanasia of shelter animals and properly disposing of remains.
• Handling, preparing, and/or maintaining the appropriate paperwork necessary to the functions of this position: preparing impoundment or disposition tickets; assisting with the completion and maintenance of records on each animal at the shelter; completing daily work records; filing offense reports.
• Providing customer assistance to the visiting public: showing animals for adoption; completing adoption papers; collecting fees.
• Assisting the supervisor in preparing and conducting educational programs for the public regarding animal control, to generate interest and support.
• Operating a personal computer as well as other office equipment; two-way radio, hand tools, animal capture equipment such as traps, snares, catch pole, and snake handling equipment.

Typical qualifications include:

• High School diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of experience equivalent to Animal Control Officer; or any combination of education and experience which provides the skills and abilities requisite for this position. Must possess a valid driver's license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification.
